Hexiangzhu (Heritage Scent Beads) is a botanical art form born in the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD). Practiced in the Imperial court and carried by scholars, it is the art of blending dozens of dried roots, bark, seeds, and petals according to the classical four-part principle of Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi — sovereign, minister, assistant, and envoy. Each herb plays a role. Nothing is arbitrary. The result is a fragrance of extraordinary depth that can only come from centuries of refinement.
Today, Hexiangzhu is a formally recognised Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.
